Affirming yourself and others is really important. It’s one little thing you can do that can make a difference.

But sometimes it’s really hard to affirm ourselves because the words that have been shared with us have torn down our self worth and any confidence we may have had.

But there is hope.

Things can change.

We can learn how to turn those negative, belittling old messages that nag at us and bring us down into positive, affirming and encouraging messages.

It’s hard. But you don’t have to do it alone.

Here are a few suggestions.

1.) Stop subjecting yourself to those negative messages, if you can.

2.) Surround yourself with people who will encourage you, lift you up and affirm you.

3.) Find a support group who will support you if you can.

4.) Let others compliment you. Receive them gladly and soak in those truths.

5.) Write some affirmations to yourself and put them in different places, speaking them in to existence daily, if not more.  I suggest a line or two of positive thought to replace the negative things that have been spoken to you.

Example- If someone continuously told you that you were ugly, right notes that continuously tell you how beautiful you are. Because that’s what you are……a beautiful person.

6.) Write and list of things you do like about yourself and have a friend or two write a list about you too, only to include the positive things. Review these lists frequently and especially when you’re down.

7.) Search the internet for positive, encouraging articles, poems, blogs and people that have some kind words to share. Keep them close.

Some of these things may sound really silly and as you know, none of these things will fix or heal you, but you may find them helpful and encouraging as you work through your difficult time.

Affirm yourself, because you are worth it and you are beautiful.

No matter where you are, no matter what you are going through-take care of yourself.  Struggling with and/or healing from something can be really hard, trying and exhausting.

Take care of yourself through the tough and difficult stuff.

This can be hard for some, if you’re not use to doing it and if you think you aren’t worth it.

But as I already mentioned here, you are worth it.

If you’re going through something that seems almost impossible to work through.

Take a break.

Take a break and do something for you.

Take your mind off what you’re enduring and do something else.

I’m not suggesting that you go on a drug /drinking binge or any other binge that would just leave you feeling empty and sometimes worse when you’re done with it. I’m not talking about burying yourself in to your work or chores around the house, I’m not talking about sleeping all day and I’m not talking about doing anything that may be considered violent to some extent. I’m talking about something that is better for you.

Something good. Something positive.

Something relaxing. Something healthy.

There are so many different things you can do.

Pick one. Pick two.

Go to dinner with some friends or some other loved one, go see a movie (something uplifting), pray, meditate, go to a retreat center for a weekend,  plan a get away to somewhere you haven’t been, get together with some folks and play board games, get a pedicure, manicure (yes, men too), get a massage, go to an amusement park for the day, go roller skating, scrap book, create a collage picture, make or build something, read a really good book (perhaps something not too intense, the point is to relax and get your mind off you what you’re going through), volunteer your time to something with a good cause (homeless shelter, food pantry, animal rescue, etc.), go to the library, trade your movies and/or books in and get new ones, learn how to knit.

There are a lot of things you can do that don’t cost much, if anything. Find something, a variety of things, that is going to get your mind off of what you are going through for a day or two.

Take a break.

Take care of yourself.

You’re worth it.

Replace lies with truth.

September 23, 2009

To you,

Has someone told that you were ugly, a failure, you weren’t wanted, you were an accident, that you wouldn’t add up to anything or that God didn’t love you? Maybe someone made you feel that you weren’t good enough or something was wrong with you because you look a little different than others, that you had no value, that you were sick because you are gay or some other reason.

They were wrong.

They lied.

You don’t have to believe those lies any longer.

Throw them away.

Spit them out.

You are an amazing person.

An incredible gift.

You may not see that now.

Hang on.

You will.

Maybe you don’t see any point in pushing through anymore.

Don’t let go.

You are too precious.

Don’t let them win.

You are too precious.

I know this is tough. It’s hard and it hurts like hell.

Keep fighting. Keep pushing through.

You are worth it.

It will be ok. You will find freedom.

You are wonderful.

You are loved.

You are adored.

You are cherished.

Take back those truths that were once stolen from.

Believe them.
Receive them.
Rest in them.

Whether you have been sexually abused, verbally abused, mentally abused, spiritually abused or physically abused, these words were written for you.

I hope you chase after and find healing, rest, freedom and peace.

Take care of yourself.
